Counseling can be provided in person or over the telephone, and generally takes about one hour. The length of your session will vary depending on the number of questions you have, and don’t be shy about asking anything you want to know. You may want to have an adult family member, a trusted friend, financial or other advisor attend the counseling session or be on the telephone with you.

Either the homeowner(s) or the homeowner's authorized legal representative can request reverse mortgage counseling. Legal representatives may be a guardian, conservator, or person holding a durable power of attorney who has been authorized to act in legal matters by the owner.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Some folks have asked if they can waive the counseling, but this is not possible. HUD-approved counseling by an approved agency is mandatory, no matter what kind of loan you choose. It is an important safeguard to educate you about everything you need to know about the transaction. Using an unbiased third party to explain your options and go over the details will help you understand the process and help you decide if you are making the correct choice for your future.
